The state of the economy resulted in difficult times for Canadians in 2024! Challenges have been plenty, yet the Kamloops Food Bank’s strength in leadership, the dedication of our team, and the commitment of our volunteers have ensured that we continue to meet the growing needs of our community.
The Food Banks Canada 2024 Poverty Report Card paints a sobering picture: Canada is in a state of transition, with poverty and food insecurity worsening across the country. More and more Canadians are living paycheck to paycheck, and we see the impact of this in Kamloops. Over the past year, the demand for our services has surged by an incredible 85%, particularly among seniors and children five and under. In the face of these challenges, we have achieved some remarkable milestones. A standout accomplishment this year was receiving accreditation under the Canada Food Bank Standards of Excellence. This significant and rigorous project positions us as the first Food Bank in BC—and one of only a handful across Canada—to achieve this recognition. This speaks volumes about the high standards and dedication of our organization.
Our commitment to environmental stewardship has also been celebrated. This year, we were honored to receive the Environmental Award (Not-for-Profit) from the Recycling Council of BC, recognizing our innovative and impactful sustainability initiatives.
We are also incredibly proud of our President and CEO, Bernadette Siracky, who was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal by MLA Peter Milobar. This honor reflects her years of dedicated service to the community and her visionary leadership that continually drives the Kamloops Food Bank to new heights.
As I conclude my time as Chair, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Serving in this role for the past three years has been an honor and a privilege. I have enjoyed working with each and every Board member whose hard work and wisdom are instrumental in our success. Words cannot express my gratitude to Bernadette. Your vision, compassion, tenacity and dedication is key to the strength of our organization. I look forward to seeing the Kamloops Food Bank thrive under the capable leadership of Connor Shelton.
To our donors, team, and volunteers—you are the foundation of all that we do. Your generosity and hard work inspire us daily. Together, we will continue to rise to the challenges and create a stronger, more resilient community. Thank you for being part of this journey.
